Nadine Merabi – Ono Uno

The fashion brand Ono Uno has appointed UK based designer Nadine Merabi as its Creative Director. The label launched with womenswear this autumn and will be followed by menswear and accessories in 2014. Nadine Merabi launched her eponymous brand over two and half years ago a now is household name, worn at major events and receiving national press. Each dress is bespoke and custom made for clients. Her designs encapsulate the female figures with pure elegance, her dresses demand attention.

We caught up with Nadine, on the cusp of party season on her ‘stand out’ collection, a serious choice for those wanting to step up the glitz factor. We spoke with her on her rise in the world of fashion and her thoughts on creating a beautiful dress.

Tell us more about what goes when you’re creating elegant, timeless dresses?

I gain my inspiration from my everyday life, the people I am with and certain things I am experiencing in my life at any given moment. My collections often reflect my mood at the time. Once I’ve gained inspiration for my collection, I develop it in the way in which I think will most flatter a woman and make her feel confident and glamorous.

Tell us more about how you started off?

My background began in sports science and I played international hockey for ten years. I didn’t study fashion at university. I decided that making and selling clothes was what I wanted to do; so I decided to change my career in events and went out and bought myself a sewing machine. After endless nights of watching YouTube videos and teaching myself how to sew, I started to make dresses for myself to wear on a night out. I received so many comments on my own dresses that I knew I should start to make them for other people. It developed from there, and there was an opportunity to have a rail in a pop up shop, so I gave it a go.

You have recently launched the Ono Uno collection in Selfridges.  This must have been an amazing achievement?

Yes, it is definitely a highlight of my career and such a big achievement. I still have the Nadine Merabi label, but working as creative director for Ono Uno has provided me with a much bigger structure and financial backing to take the brand global. We are now working on an Accessory line and Menswear collection for 2014/15.

Your collection is incredibly flattering to any woman – where does your inspiration come from?

I use myself as a muse – I only create designs that I would wear and would feel amazing in. My collections are driven by lifestyle and I love statement pieces.

Where do you see Ono Uno in the future?

Leading on from the our signature women’s wear collection, we will be involved in London Fashion Week in February 2014, which will also incorporate our debut accessories line. Next season we will be launching menswear, as there is currently a huge gap in the market for this.

What advice would you give to any designers starting out?

I would tell them to just stay true to what their style is and not to feel like they have to conform to what other designers are doing. It’s good to follow trends but make sure to keep your own individuality. Work hard and then work a little harder!

The Ono Uno collection by any estimation is a ‘stand out from the crowd’ dress. Glitzy yet elegant with an edgy twist – we love this range and with party season fast approaching Nadine’s collection will leave you spoilt glamorously.
