Spolight: LucyQ – A diamond in the rocks

Lucy Q

Boasting some serious awards in creating breathtaking jewellery and hotly tipped to be Jewellery Designer of the Year 2014 – A-Listed gets a sneaky peak into the world of LucyQ and what makes her tick…

What fascinates you about designing jewellery?

Itís something Iíve loved doing since I was young! I designed my first collection when I was 18! I think itís because when Iím designing I love the fact that I can be as creative as possible Ė anything goes. You can be completely avant-garde and crto eate totally Ďout-thereí pieces for the catwalk or more commercial for selling on the high street. For me the challenge and the fun is in trying to create pieces that work on both levels Ė that are highly design-led, but also commercial and sell well. ∑

How did you become a jewellery designer?

My Granny was a jewellery designer. When I was just 8 years old I used to sit with her in her workshop Ė watching with wide-eyed fascination at the pieces she created. She used to hand me pots of buttons, so that I could make my own designs and I spent many happy hours stringing them into necklaces and bracelets. It was from this time on that my love of creating my own unusual jewellery grew. Iíve been designing jewellery since I was 18 years old and after achieving a BA Hons in Metalwork and Jewellery Design at Sheffield Hallam University, I spent some time gaining hands-on experience working with a silversmith, so that I could truly understand that medium. After that, I decided to take the plunge and Iím still doing what I love today! ∑

Gold or silver?

Silver will always be my favouriteÖ.but Iím learning to love working with gold vermeil too! ∑ If you could pick one piece of jewellery to finish off an outfit, what would it be and why? It would have to be the Large Drip Necklace. I think this piece is the ultimate head-turner! It really stands out, and complements any outfit beautifully. Whenever I wear it Iím always approached by people who want to comment on itÖitís a talking point piece! ∑

You have been a finalist for ĎDesigner of the Yearí at the 2013 and 2014 UK Jewellery Awards. What did it feel like and were you expecting this?

To be honest, I am so overwhelmed to be short-listed twice in a row. I was not expecting it at all and I felt privaliged to be chosen. Being nominated for an industry award is such an accolade and really makes all my efforts worthwhile. ∑

Your one of the UKís prestigious TOP 100 Jewellery designers – what's your advice to other people interested in designing their own collection?

The best advice I can give to anyone who wants to start designing their own jewellery collection is to design from the heart. If you do this, then you will always enjoy the creative process and work to be able to bring about your best possible creations.

What are you plans for the future?

I have loads! One of the things Iím planning to do in 2015 is exhibit my jewellery designs overseas and really launch the LucyQ brand to the international market. Iím also in the process of launching a brand new e-commerce website which will take the brand to a whole new level as the site will be highly visual and super easy to shop.
