Launching exclusively at Waitrose stores from June 10th, Bulldog’s ‘Classic Reads’ gift with purchase (RRP £5.00) features a selection of classic British novels paired with four Bulldog skincare products.

The limited edition ‘Classic Reads’ gift packs celebrate some of the finest writing in the English language with four treasured Penguin titles: The Time Machine (H.G. Wells), Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson), The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and The War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells).

All four iconic covers have been reimagined with a distinctly Swiss style aesthetic by Bulldog’s in-house design team. The designs take inspiration from the stories themselves, with circular hoops representing Sherlock Holmes’ magnifying glass and a split page colour representing the split personality conflict between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. An hourglass signifies the passage of time in H.G. Wells’ Time Machine, whilst circles represent different planets in War of the Worlds.

Bulldog Designer Chris Falkner said: “It’s one of graphic design’s holy grails to create a cover for a Penguin Classics title, let alone a limited edition set.”

“Drawing inspiration from Swiss design, and conventions from Bulldog’s own brand aesthetic, the covers all feature elements lifted from the pages of the books. Sherlock Holmes’ loupe along with an hour-glass symbolic of The Time Machine are obvious visual links.”

“More subtly the two-coloured division of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and the view of Earth from Mars, influenced from The War of the Worlds make up the striking designs hinting at the books’ topics.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Bulldog founder Simon Duffy said: “The ‘Classic Reads’ Father’s Day campaign is a very exciting promotion for Bulldog and we are delighted to be partnering with Penguin Books. We agree with Groucho Marx’s assertion that outside of a dog, a book is a man’s best friend, but there is a wealth of timeless classics that we all wished we owned, or perhaps never got around to reading.”

“We hope that every dad who receives one of these fantastic gift sets will enjoy the skincare benefits of Bulldog products and a well deserved chance to rediscover a great selection of Penguin Classics.”

Sam Voulters, Penguin Classics Brand Manager added: “In our 80th anniversary year, we’re delighted to be partnering with another great British brand to reach new audiences for these iconic works of literature.”

The Complete Bulldog ‘Classic Reads’ Collection Includes:

The Time Machine (H.G. Wells) and Bulldog Sensitive Moisturiser, 100ml (RRP £5.00)

A chilling, prophetic take on mankind’s possible future, The Time Machine sees a Victorian scientist propelled into the year AD 802,701, where he is delighted to find that suffering has been replaced by beauty and contentment in the form of the Eloi, an elfin species descended from man. But he soon realizes that they are simply remnants of a once-great culture – now weak and living in terror of the sinister Morlocks lurking in the deep tunnels, who threaten his very return home. H.G. Wells defined much of modern science fiction with this 1895 tale of time travel, which questions humanity, society and our place on Earth.

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Robert Louis Stevenson) and Bulldog Original Moisturiser, 100ml (RRP £5.00)

Published as a ‘shilling shocker’ in 1886, Robert Louis Stevenson’s dark psychological fantasy gave birth to the popular idea of the split personality. Set in a hellish, fog-bound London, the story of outwardly respectable Dr. Jekyll, who unleashes his deepest cruelties and most murderous instincts when he is transformed into sinister Edward Hyde, is a Gothic masterpiece and a chilling exploration of humanity’s basest capacity for evil. Robert Louis Stevenson’s innovative thriller remains as shocking now as when it was first published.

The Hound of the Baskervilles (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) and Bulldog Original Face Wash, 150ml (RRP £5.00)

The Hound of the Baskervilles is perhaps the best-loved case of legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Watson, as the great detective’s arch-rationalism is confronted by a seemingly supernatural terror. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead in the grounds of his country house, his face contorted with fear, Holmes is drawn into a mysterious case involving an ancient family curse, savage brutality and a hellish, spectral hound that roams the foggy moors. But is it really something unearthly that walks there?

The War of the Worlds (H.G. Wells) and Bulldog Original Face Scrub, 125ml (RRP £5.00)

In this pioneering, shocking and nightmarish tale, naïve suburban Londoners investigate a strange cylinder from space, but are instantly incinerated by an all-destroying heat-ray.

Soon, gigantic killing machines that chase and feed on human prey are threatening the whole of mankind. A pioneering work of alien invasion fiction, The War of the Worlds’ journalistic style contrasts disturbingly with its horrifying visions of the human race under siege.
